The final tournament finished up today in Winston Salem with Austrian Jurgen Melzer taking the title. Melzer was the most solid player all week as he defeated 3 solid opponents in Dmitry Tursunov, Sam Querrey, and Gael Monfils on route to the title. Monfils retired in the finals due to some sort of abdominal injury he suffered in the earlier rounds. Good week for Gael though heading into the open, but you certainly wonder if he will be 100% going into next week’s play.
As for the 6 American men that remained after the first round of US Open Qualifying, only 4 made it to the third round, and only one actually qualified. Donald Young cruised through his section of the draw and will play Martin Klizan in the first round of the main draw. Another note, Kalamazoo runner up Jared Donaldson had a very nice win against Ilya Marchenko before falling to Phillip Petzschner.
Joey and I will be together tomorrow for a video presentation of our official US Open draw analysis.
