Day 3: Black Wednesday

Day 3 was one of the craziest in Grand Slam history, as 7 former world number 1’s between the men and women were beaten. I already wrote a piece on the biggest upset of them all, Roger Federer losing to Sergiy Stakhovsky. There were many more great stories.

Dustin Brown With the Win of his Life- Just a few years ago, Dustin Brown was traveling from future to future in an RV camper, paying for gas with the little prize money he recieved. Today, he defeated the former world number 1 and grand slam champion Lleyton Hewitt. I’ve followed him for a few years, and I love his style of play. He’s got the big serve, and he backs it up with some entertaining volleys. Serve and volley may not be dead after all, with both Brown and Stakhovsky winning today. His enormous forehand can go 10 feet out, or be an astounding winner. It’s the first time he’s gotten to the third round of a grand slam, and he will nearly double his prize money on the year. With the crazy results thus far, he has a good draw and will play Adrian Mannarino in the third round. I’m rooting for him to make a deep run.

Gulbis Takes Advantage of Injured Tsonga- For 2 sets, Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Ernests Gulbis were playing some unreal tennis. Both were serving huge, and Tsonga in particular was hitting great volleys. But after Gulbis broke to win the second set, Tsonga called the trainer and showed that he had injured his knee. His movement was compromised, and Gulbis took advantage. Jo retired after the third set, and even though I picked Gulbis to win the match, I was sad and disappointed for Jo.

Everything Else- John Isner was forced to retire after about 10 minutes on court when he landed off of a serve and felt something in his knee. An unfortunate end for the American. Giant Killer Steve Darcis withdrew before his match started citing a shoulder injury. Mikhail Youzhny came from 4-2 down in the fifth set to defeat Vasek Pospisil, a good effort for the Russian. He could play Andy Murray in the 4th round. Andy Murray looked very good in his win over Lu. Murray will be expected to reach the final again now that Federer is out. It’s gotta be tough with the expectation of a nation on your shoulders.

My Picks- I don’t think anybody did very well with their picks today. I was 9 for 16.
