I have been waiting a long time for this particular day at the French. The quarterfinals start today and there is one match in particular that could be an instant classic like what we had with Stan the man and Gasquet yesterday. But we will start with the other men’s quarterfinal match between fellow Spainiards David Ferrer and Tommy Robredo.
Robredo has been the talk of the tournament coming back from 2 sets to none down in 3 straight matches. He has defeated Sijsling, Monfils, and Almagro in these matches. He gets rewarded for his efforts by playing his toughest opponent yet in Ferrer. Ferrer played some of his best tennis against Anderson in the last round as he demolished the big South African. This is brutal for Tommy because he will have to work twice as hard to win this match as he did in his last 3 matches to win this one.
Although Robredo is playing the tennis of his life, Ferrer will eventually wear his compariot down in 4 sets and advance to his second consectuive French Open semifinal.
Roger Federer vs. Jo – Wilifried Tsonga: Here we go. The moment the draw came out, my mouth was watering when I saw that these 2 were in the same quarter. These 2 have had a very tight series. Federer has won the last 3 meetings, but their most recent in Australia was as tight as can be with Roger winning in 5 sets. The key in this match will be the Tsonga serve. If he is serving big and dictating with his forehand, he has a solid shot to beat Roger. The crowd will also be going bannas for Tsonga. They haven’t had Frenchman this close to the finals since Monfils made the semis in 2011. Roger did not look great against Simon in the last round, but maybe a test was what he needed to prepare for this showdown. Ultimately, I think the Frenchman comes through in 5. He hasn’t choked at the French like Murray does at Wimbledon. Tsonga is riding a wave of confidence and will upset Federer on route to the semis.
It’s gonna be a great day of tennis! Let’s go!!!!!
