Just a quick update for this past weekend’s play which involved many first time winners and young American play.
Milos Raonic made the biggest splash in the tennis world when he defeated Tomas Berdych to win his second title this year. Raonic fired 18 aces as he defeated the top seeded Berdych 7 – 6(4), 6 – 3.
Joao Sousa claimed his first career title when he defeated Frenchman Julien Benneteau in Kuala Lumpur. The man from Portugal won by a score of 2 – 6, 7 – 5, 6 – 4.
As for the young American action, Donald Young was the winner in the Napa Challenger, defeating Australian Matthew Ebden in the final. Young defeated Tim Smyczek in the semis while Ebden notched a win against the number one seed Denis Kudla in the quarters and fourth seed Alex Kuznetsov in the semis. Bradley Klahn and Rhyne Williams were also singles quarterfinalists. Steve Johnson made the finals of the doubles (w/Smyczek). And in the futures tour, UCLA standout Marcos Giron claimed his maiden futures singles title when he upset Jarmere Jenkins in 3 sets in the finals.
